Using DAZzle with ACT! Version 3

ACT! 3.0 can be customized to include a button on its toolbar to launch DAZzle and display a menu of choices for using the two programs together. The procedure for doing so in ACT! 3.0 is different from the one in DAZzle’s on-line help, which applies to ACT! 2.

Note: If you don’t have DAZzle version 2.6b or later, these procedures work for single addresses but the Print List From File and Dial-A-ZIP List From File options will affect only the first address in your ACT! list. You need to upgrade to the current version of DAZzle, which was rewritten to work with ACT! version 3.0.

Installing the DAZzle Macro in ACT! 3

  1. In ACT!, go to the Tools menu and choose Customize.
  2. Click on the Commands tab.
  3. Click on the New button.
  4. For the Command Name, type DAZzle.
  5. For the Command Line, give the path to your DAZZLE.EXE file, then a space, a minus sign, and the word "act". Example: c:\dazzle\dazzle.exe -act.
  6. For Start In, give the directory where you run DAZZLE.EXE. Example: c:\dazzle.
  7. For Description, type Launch DAZzle for ACT!
  8. For Button/Tooltip text, type DAZzle.
  9. For Menu text, type &DAZzle.
  10. Leave Run set at Normal.
  11. Click on Save.
  12. Click on the Toolbar tab.
  13. Near the top of the screen, under Toolbar, choose Contact Window.
  14. Near the bottom of the screen, under Command, choose DAZzle.
  15. In the middle of the screen, there is a scroll bar with the buttons currently available on your toolbar. Move sideways until you see the position where you want to put a button for DAZzle. Click on the button currently in that position. Then click on the Insert button in the lower half of the screen.
  16. Click on Save, then click on Close.
You now have a button on your toolbar for DAZzle. Click on it. DAZzle will appear, with a pop-up box displaying the 4 options specifically for ACT!

Using ACT! from DAZzle

The procedures for using ACT! in DAZzle are the same for ACT! 3 as for version 2. Set it up under File|Preferences|PIMs. See DAZzle’s on-line help.

If You Get an Error that DAZzle is Unable to Make a DDE Connection with ACT!

  1. Check if ACT! is running. If not, run it. If it is, proceed to the next step.
  2. Exit DAZzle.
  3. With DAZzle closed, edit the file LIST.INI in the DAZzle directory with a text editor (such as Notepad).
Note: If you don’t have a LIST.INI file, run DAZzle. Go to the File menu, choose Preferences, then PIMs, and then ACT! Under Set Options for Selected PIM, choose ACT! and click on Set Up. Click on Default Mapping, then click on OK, then OK again. Go back to step 2 above.
  4. Search for the [Act!] section.
  5. In that section, change the line that reads: Service=ActWin2 to Service=ACTWIN3.
Capitalize it exactly as you see here. If the line is not there, add it under the [Act!] section.
  6. In that section, change the line that reads: System=System to System=Database.
Capitalize it exactly as you see here. If the line is not there, add it under the [Act!] section.
  7. In that section, add Type=Act! if the line is not already there. Capitalize it exactly as you see here.
  8. Save the LIST.INI file.
  9. Start DAZzle again.
